FIRST Robotics Team STEMpunk #4531!

Time-Crunch

With the Wisconsin winter throwning more punches than typical, the team has had one weeks worth of meetings cancelled. That is a full week out of only a 6 week build season! Thank goodness for a good computer model of the robot so we can continue designing and making spare parts after stop-build day.

STEMpunk's Gameplay Strategy for 'Destination: Deep Space'

Our strategy for the 2019 game is to lift ourselves AND our alliance partners onto the 3rd platform (habitat). This will give our alliance 36 match points and 1 ranking point. The platform is large enough for one robot. Two would be a challenge and to get the 3rd one, it would have to be hanging from an alliance partner from a single robot. This is why we are planning on lifting ourselves and both alliance partners to that top platform. In addition we are planning on placing hatches. In conclusion our main goal is to get the maximum points possible from the hab platform.

Team Resources

We will be updating our resources page regularly with helpful links and documents. Just posted: The 2019 rulebook and an audio recording of sections 5 to 9 of the rules (Thank You Andy Mark!).

Travel Meeting and Open House

1pm February 9th @ Two Rivers High

Students traveling to competition need to attend with their parental unit. Travel requirements and paperwork will be thoroughly covered. We will have a notary present for medical forms. If you are traveling and do not attend the meeting, you will need to have the medical forms notarized elsewhere.

How my High School FIRST Robotics Team STEMpunk used LEAN to build a Winning Robot

A very well written article by Ambrose, STEMpunk's Business Captain. It's great to see the initiative taken by our students to document improvements for future members. It also showcases the impact our corporate sponsors have on the success of the program and driving youth interest in manufacturing.

Earth Day Celebration @ Point Beach Energy Center

Northern Lights Regional - Duluth, MN

STEMpunk earns Engineering Inspiration Award

STEMpunk will be competing on a global level in Detroit this April. After an impressive showing at a regional competition in Duluth, Minnesota, our team was recognized with the Engineering Inspiration Award, which celebrates a team's outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team's school and community.

Our robot started out hot with a 5-game winning streak that helped us rank in the top 4 out of 58 teams during the first day. Then after taking a few losses, we slipped a little lower in the rankings. When it came time for the top seeded teams to pick their alliances for the elimination bracket, STEMpunk was selected as the 7th pick overall. When matched up against a powerhouse alliance in the quarter finals, our alliance fought valiantly but did not advance to the next round. The alliance we fell to later went on to compete in the final round and placed second overall in the regional.

STEMpunk qualified for the world championship due to both the impact its program has on our own students and to our efforts in our community. We has been active in our community raising awareness about STEM education opportunities, and for the last three years have run the Robot Faire at the Two Rivers Community House, which celebrates STEM and engages children with interactive STEM activities. We also have partnered with the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, teaching physics and design concepts to students through their annual summer ROV camps.
